The Drascombe Longboat
The 22ft Drascombe sailing dinghy is an extremely versatile boat and well suited for exploring the waters of the TCI. She has two masts and carries 172sqft of sail area. She can also be powered by oars or a small four-stroke outboard engine. The longboat is a classic British design that originated in the 1960’s and has been sailing the worlds oceans and waterways ever since. You will appreciate her manoeuvrability in small coves along with her seaworthiness in more open water. With a retractable centreboard and a maximum draft of only 3 feet she can access many of the shallow channels and cays around the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Drascombe Longboats have been used rigorously by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Baja California for the past 20 years. They are particularly suitable vessels for commercial expeditions and for learning the fundamentals of sailing.
Middle Caicos & beyond
Travel by boat or plane to the largest and most sparsely populated island in the Turks and Caicos. Explore the extensive and impressive limestone caves found there. Take a guided nature walk along one of the many coastal or inland trails. Learn about the medicinal uses of the vegetation and the history of the islands. Enjoy the native cuisine and fabulous hospitality. See samples of local handcrafts and meet the people that make them. Sail the model hand made sailing boats on the shallow sand bars. Venture over to the windward-going-through and the uninhabited Joe Grant Cay. Day and overnight trips are possible, camping or local guest houses arranged.
East Caicos Caving Expedition
This is a unique adventure across both Middle and East Caicos.
You need a minimum of three days and two nights to undertake this trip and a reasonable level of fitness and agility are required.
Spend the evenings on Middle Caicos in a local guesthouse.
Venture over to East Caicos by boat and explore three separate systems; all remain virtually unexplored for over 100 years.
Expect to get dirty, sweaty, and tired as you explore some the array of large rooms, tight passages, and secret entrances scattered throughout the caves.
They are all located along the old donkey railway that was built to facilitate the mining of guano and the sisal plantations in the mid-19th century.
See evidence of the Lucayan Indians using the caves for shelter at least 300 years before that.
Look out for a large owl that guards the mouth of one of the caves today and find some rare shrimp hiding in lightless pools deep in the interior of the caves.
The final cave along the trail is an impressively large chamber filled with crystal clear cold water. You will have to bring your mask and fins to discover what is at the back of this cave!!
Spend the second night back on Middle Caicos and venture slowly back to Pine Cay via North Caicos on the third day.
Salt Cay
Fly to Salt Cay, a small colonial outpost on the edge of the Turk's Island banks.
This small island has a population of less than 100 people and a unique charm all of it’s own. Donkeys, chickens, and cows roam the streets; guided educational walks around the historic salt ponds and sleepy districts are conducted year round. In the winter months (January through March) you can take a boat journey to look for the majestic humpback whales that migrate past these shores. There is also some excellent bird watching on Salt Cay and specific birding tours can be arranged on demand. Boat and snorkel excursions to the spectacular Great Sand Cay, HMS Endymion shipwreck and other nearby islands are possible during fine weather.
Overnight trips to Salt Cay are recommended and accommodation is arranged.
